The Phone Mason
A phone under inspection in the Auckland workshop

How grading works.

We grade every phone on one thing: how it looks. The grade never tells you how it works, because every phone we sell passes the same full test first. A grade just lets you pick how much wear you're happy with, and pay less for more wear. Want the detail? See how we test every phone.

The three grades

All three work like new. They just look a bit different. Here is what to expect.

Grade 01

Pristine

Mint, or very close to it. Hard to spot any marks, with minimal scratches on the screen. You'll struggle to tell it from a new phone.

Grade 02

Very Good

Close to like new. Maybe one or two nicks on the rim. Little to no scratches on the screen, though you might catch a light mark when you tilt it to the light. The frame still looks near new.

Grade 03

Good

Some honest wear, like a few nicks or signs of use on the frame or back. The screen may have some visible scratches, but the phone is completely usable. It works 100%, and any wear is cosmetic only. Our best price.

What every phone goes through

Every phone gets the same care, whatever grade you pick. Here is the short version.

QUALITY
We test how it works

We check the screen, cameras, speakers, mics, buttons, Face ID, Touch ID and all the sensors. Every part has to pass.

CHARGING
Battery 90% or better

Every iPhone comes with a battery at 90% health or better. We test it, and put in a new one if it falls short.

SETTINGS
We wipe it clean

We reset the phone to factory settings and clean it. We make sure it is not locked to someone else.

GUARANTEED
We grade it honestly

We grade how it looks against set rules. We never talk it up. What you see is what you get.

Grading FAQ

Does a lower grade work worse?

No. The grade is only about how it looks. A Good phone passes the same tests as a Pristine one. It just has more wear you can see.

Which grade should I pick?

Want it to look new? Pick Pristine. Just want it to work great for the best price? Good is brilliant value. Very Good sits in the middle.

Will the screen have scratches?

We grade every screen honestly. A Pristine screen has minimal scratches and looks like new. A Very Good screen has little to no scratches, maybe a faint mark when you tilt it to the light. A Good screen may have some visible scratches, but the phone is completely usable. We check the screen on every phone.

What about the battery?

Every iPhone comes with a battery at 90% health or better. We test it first and replace any that fall short. We do this for every grade.

Every grade gets the same 12 month warranty.

Pick the look you like. We back them all the same.
